– 3 cups (375 grams) all-purpose flour, spooned & leveled – 2 teaspoons baking powder – ½ teaspoon salt – 1 cup (190 grams) shortening – 1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar – 1 large egg room temperature – 2 tablespoons (30ml) milk – 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract Optional: easy sugar cookie icing or royal icing

Direction

Heat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Put two big baking sheets with parchment or silicone mats aside. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.

Step 1

A large bowl of shortening and sugar should be fully combined after 1–2 minutes of electric mixing. Add the egg, milk, and vanilla extract and mix, scraping the bowl.

Step 2

Add dry ingredients and mix. When mixed, the crumbly mixture will come together. Form a ball with your hands after the dough comes together. Cut dough in half.

Place half of the dough on a floured parchment paper, cover with another, and roll out ¼-inch thick. Between two parchment papers, repeat with remaining half of dough.

If you like cooler dough, refrigerate both pieces of rolled out dough between parchment paper on a baking sheet for 30 minutes to an hour.

Undo parchment. Cutter 2.5–3-inch cookie dough shapes on baking pans with space between them. Transfer cut-out cookies to baking sheet with thin spatula.

Step 6

Roll and cut more parchment-paper waste dough. Cookie dough leftover. Bake 9–12 minutes for crisp, lightly browned cookies. Place baking sheets on wire rack after 5–10 minutes.
