The Best Ho Ho Cake Recipe

This beautiful Ho Ho Cake has layers of light chocolate cake, whipped vanilla filling, and chocolate frosting.


For the cake: – 6 Tablespoons cocoa powder – 2 cups sugar – 3 cups flour – 1 teaspoon salt – 2 teaspoons baking soda – 2 teaspoons baking powder – 2 cups water – 1 cup vegetable or canola oil – 2 Tablespoons vinegar – 1 teaspoon vanilla extract For the cream frosting: – 5 Tablespoons flour – 1 1/4 cup milk – 1 cup sugar – 1 cup shortening – 1 teaspoon vanilla – Pinch salt For the chocolate ganache: – 8 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chip – 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream


For cake:- Pre-heat the oven to 350. Grease and flour a 9x13 pan. Mix cocoa powder, sugar, flour, salt, soda, and baking powder in a large bowl.  

Step 1

Pour water, oil, vinegar, and vanilla into the dry ingredients through a hole. Combine ingredients until smooth.  

Step 2

Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool.

Step 3

For cream filling:- Stir flour and milk in a saucepan. Whisk the mixture often over medium heat until bubbling and thickened.  

Step 4

This takes several minutes, but as it thickens, it goes fast, so keep whisking. The mixture should resemble mayonnaise. Let cool to warm.

Step 5

Mix sugar, shortening, vanilla, and salt in an electric mixer. Combine boiled mixture and shortening mixture and beat on medium high speed for 5-7 minutes until thick and fluffy. Spread evenly on cooled cake.

Step 6

For chocolate icing:- Put chocolate chips in a basin. Pour chocolate chips into just simmering cream. Whisk chips to melt.

Step 7

Cool until pourable but slightly thickened ganache. Spread the filling lightly around the edges. Before cutting and serving, let the ganache set.
