Three Things We Learned From Bronny James’ First Usc Start

USC injuries allowed Bronny James to make his first collegiate start at Colorado on Saturday night. Trojans coach Andy Enfield added LeBron James' son to his starting five after Joshua Morgan, Boogie Ellis, and Isaiah Collier were injured.

James defended Simpson on multiple possessions and showed his willingness to make hustle plays that may not be mentioned on "Sports Center" but still affect the game.

After missing Morgan (2.3 blocks per game), Ellis, and projected first-round NBA draft pick Collier, the Trojans lost 68-58 at the CU Events Center, the fifth-highest college basketball venue at 5,430 feet. James went 0-for-7 with two rebounds and one assist on a cold night.

He needs more assertiveness. Early in the game, James had good reason to defer, which he loves. His teammates, including Oziyah Sellers, helped USC start strong and lead 37-24 at halftime. As a freshman, James started 0-for-5 with two blocked shots. He is still finding his offensive role for this team.

James could have showcased his top-20 high school recruit skills in Saturday's game by playing aggressively. He needs to balance involving his teammates, which he does well, with scoring more.

He showed promise and energy despite challenges. After missing its first seven shots, James' team started the second half 3-for-15. Still, James was confident. This matters, especially for freshmen. His offense and defense helped Colorado build a double-digit lead in the second half.
